Did you know AECOM reportedly paid approximately $390 million to acquire Consigli, a Norwegian AI company focused on engineering and design automation?

At first glance, $390 million for an AI company in the AEC industry sounds like a monster number.

But when you consider AECOM’s size, global reach, and the enormous amount of project knowledge it has accumulated over decades, the investment starts to make considerably more sense.

AECOM works across transportation, water, buildings, energy, environmental services, program management, infrastructure, and major public- and private-sector projects throughout the world.

Think about the amount of information a company like that possesses.

Project data. Design data. Cost data. Schedule data. Risk data. Permitting data. Lessons learned. Client preferences. Material performance. Construction issues. Drawings. Models. Specifications.

That is institutional knowledge at scale.

The Value Is Not Just in the AI

The technology itself is only part of the story.

The larger opportunity may be AECOM’s ability to combine AI with decades of engineering knowledge, project history, technical expertise, and client information.

Every large consulting firm has valuable information buried throughout its organization.

This is where I think the conversation becomes especially interesting.

  • Evaluating alternatives
  • Interdisciplinary coordination

Any time someone says that AI can automate technical work, engineers are naturally going to wonder what that means for their role, their value, and their future.

That concern should not be dismissed.

I Do Not Think AI Eliminates the Need for Engineers

I do think it will change what firms expect from engineers.

Technical judgment will still matter.

Licensure will still matter.

Communication will still matter.

Client trust will still matter.

Accountability will still matter.

Understanding the reasoning behind an answer will still matter.

AI may be able to generate options, retrieve information, automate calculations, or accelerate portions of the design process.

But an experienced engineer will still need to determine whether the output is safe, practical, compliant, constructible, and appropriate for the client’s needs.

The engineers who understand only how to perform repetitive tasks may face more pressure.

The engineers who understand projects, clients, risk, regulations, and the reasons behind design decisions may become even more valuable.

AI Is Only as Good as the People and Data Behind It

The potential benefits do not happen automatically.

AI is only as effective as:

  • The quality of the data
  • The people guiding it
  • The safeguards surrounding its use
  • The technical review applied to its output
  • The organization’s ability to integrate it into project delivery

Poor data can produce poor conclusions faster.

Weak processes can simply become weak automated processes.

And technology without professional judgment can create a dangerous level of false confidence.

AECOM’s potential advantage is not merely that it acquired an AI company.

The greater advantage may be the combination of AI, decades of project data, technical expertise, established processes, trusted client relationships, and the financial resources to deploy the technology at scale.

The Potential for the Built Environment Is Significant

For the built environment, the possibilities are compelling:

Better designs.

Less waste.

Faster delivery.

Smarter infrastructure.

More resilient systems.

Earlier identification of risk.

Better use of materials.

Fewer repeated mistakes from one project to the next.

That does not tell us exactly how quickly the profession will change.

But it does tell us that the change is being taken seriously.

The question is no longer whether AI will become part of engineering delivery.

The more important questions are how it will be used, which firms will use it best, and which skills will become more valuable as a result.
