Damned if you Do, Damned if you Don’t: WFH, Hybrid Work, & The Great Resignation in the Civil Engineering Profession

Damned if you Do, Damned if you Don’t: WFH, Hybrid Work, & The Great Resignation in the Civil Engineering Profession

The #greatresignation continues.

So last month 4.5 million folks resigned. That’s insane to me.

There are a myriad of reasons why, of course, but some of it HAS to be due to the disconnect / unemotional attachment as a result of the rampant #WFH policies now in place with businesses across the country.

Remember the good ol’ days when everyone worked in the office five days a week?

📌Relationships were built.

📌Bonds were made.

📌Deep friendships were forged.

📌Camaraderie was important.

More often than not, when people were making choices to move on to bigger and better opportunities, there was an emotional factor to weigh.

But with fully remote work, the emotional factor in the resignation process is eliminated, and often times it is the emotional element that is the hardest challenge to overcome. As a result, resigning from a company is MUCH easier.

The flip side is, in a world that I believe has evolved to remote work almost being a requirement for someone to even consider a new opportunity, you will NOT be able to attract top talent if remote work is not an option.

There are still a lot of “old school” consulting #engineering firms that want staff back in the office full-time.

And trust me, I get it.

👉You want to build a company culture
👉You want people to get together in a conference room and collaborate over a set of plans rolled out on a table
👉You want your young talent to be mentored and developed

There is no better way to do that without having that literal face-to-face experience..

That said, companies are forcing themselves to change and innovate and collaborate and build loyalty and culture in many different ways, as they really have no choice with all the world has experienced over the past two years.

In the consulting #civilengineering world it is still rather fluid, but at the end of the day I think the best model moving forward will be a hybrid environment where folks will be expected to be in the office three days, and work from home for two.

Every company will put their little spin on what hybrid means to them, but we are past the stage of denying this type of environment…thanks to #Covid, the future is now!

What are YOUR thoughts, and what stance has your firm taken?

I look forward to seeing your responses!
