THE HARDEST CALLS MATTER MOST :: PROFESSIONALISM SHOWS IN THE “NO”

THE HARDEST CALLS MATTER MOST :: PROFESSIONALISM SHOWS IN THE “NO”

The Toughest Part of the Job

Sometimes the hardest calls in recruiting are not the wins.

They are the ones where a candidate did almost everything right…

And still does not get the offer.

When Everything Looks Right on Paper

I had one of those calls today.

  • Strong background
  • Interviewed well
  • Solid leadership experience
  • No major red flags

From an experience standpoint, the boxes were checked.

But at the end of the day, the client did not feel enough conviction to move forward.

And that is where things get difficult.

The Kind of Call Most People Avoid

Those are not easy conversations to have.

And that is exactly why I believe they should happen over the phone whenever possible.

Not by email.
Not by text.
Not by disappearing.
Not by hiding behind a screen.

Because when someone has:

  • Prepared for the interview
  • Invested time and energy
  • Followed up professionally
  • Started to picture the opportunity

They deserve more than a generic message.

They deserve a conversation.

Why It Matters

It would be easy to avoid these calls.

Let it sit.
Send a quick note.
Move on to the next search.

But that is not how I look at it.

For me, this is about professionalism.

And respect.

Because how you handle the “no” moments says a lot more about you than how you handle the “yes” ones.

The Approach I Try to Take

There is no perfect way to deliver tough feedback.

But there is a right way to handle it.

I try to keep a few things in mind:

  • Be honest
  • Be timely
  • Be respectful
  • Do not sugarcoat it, but do not be careless either
  • Treat people the way you would want someone to treat your son or daughter

That last one matters.

Recruiting Is More Than Placements

Recruiting is not just about filling roles.

It is about relationships.

And those relationships are built just as much in the difficult moments as they are in the successful ones.

The Bottom Line

Anyone can make the easy call.

The real test is how you handle the hard ones.

Because that is where your character shows up.
